There’s never been a better time to be travelling to Europe as a vegan. There are vegan options in almost every city, especially the ones you’d least expect!
As vegan travellers, we always make sure we’re prepared when arriving in a different city or country. Food is so important to us and we love trying any local cuisine when we can find veganised versions.
Luckily some cuisines in Europe are quite vegan friendly and it’s possible to find delicious local delicacies, such as cabbage and mushroom pierogi in Poland and fresh simits and orange juice in Istanbul.
There are many vegan-friendly destinations in Europe to visit and some of them are so underrated! So on our vegan cities in Europe list, you’ll the most popular cities to visit whilst also discovering a few underrated vegan-friendly cities to explore!
15+ Best Vegan Friendly Cities in Europe (2024)
In no particular order, here are 15+ vegan friendly cities in Europe! Each of these destinations is known to have enough vegan options for a city break in Europe and also amazing things to do!
1. Krakow
First up on our list of vegan food in Europe is Krakow in Poland – one of our favourite vegan friendly cities in Europe to visit. We’ve actually visited twice now and got to revisit our favourite vegan cafe in Europe.
Polish cuisine is incredible and there are a few spots around the city you can find local cuisine. Vegan pierogi can be found in many restaurants or stalls, although they may not be marked as vegan and obwarzanek’s (Turkish bagels) are found all around the city.
As the second largest city in Poland, there is also plenty of things to do in Krakow to keep you entertained. Spend the day learning about Auschwitz or wander around the Jewish district. The best thing is, you won’t have to look far for amazing food. We even have a guide with the best vegan restaurants in Krakow.

2. Lisbon
The coastal capital city of Portugal is another vegan friendly city in Europe. Lisbon is a lovely place to visit and there are some vegan spots all around the city.
The Lisbon district stretches out to Sintra (home of the beautiful Pena Palace), and we even found vegan options at an Indian restaurant in the area. Whenever you’re worried about food, Indian cuisine is amazing for vegetarians and vegans in Europe.

3. Brasov
Have you ever thought of visiting Romania? Brasov’s vegan community is growing each year with more vegan options in this Transylvanian city. Plus you can visit the castle that’s been labelled as Dracula’s home in the Carpathian Mountains. We have a 2 day Brasov guide to inspire you!
Lent could be one of the best times to visit Brasov as a vegan. Every year fasting consists of avoiding meat, dairy and eggs which means there’s a lot of great vegan food going around. Around the time of Lent, look out for a ‘De Post’ menu which is basically a vegan menu! Just be careful of honey (miere) in some dishes.
Romania also has a lot of dishes using raw ingredients, we noticed many restaurants offering mostly raw food in vegan restaurants, including deserts. You’ll find a few of them around Brasov!

4. London
It’s impossible to write a vegan friendly cities in Europe list without including London, the capital of England! The United Kingdom is one of the most vegan friendly destinations in Europe and in the world.
The majority of restaurants in London have a vegan option and there are plenty of fully vegan restaurants and cafes too. We were lucky enough to call London home for a while and ate SO much good food whilst discovering the best things to do in London.
It’s even possible to find vegan pies, sausages and mashed potato & vegan fish and chips from British cuisine! However, there are so many irresistible cuisines all around the city to make your trip all about vegan food.

5. Amsterdam
Amsterdam is another capital city that’s stayed in the top 10 vegan cities in Europe. As the lifestyle in the city is very eco-friendly, it makes sense there’s a great vegan community too!
There are also many great things to do in Amsterdam whilst enjoying amazing vegan food. Head to the museums, parks and canals or take a visit to the Anne Frank House and learn about the dark history.
We had no trouble finding vegan friendly places in Amsterdam including in the supermarkets. Of course, dutch fries are also vegan (because it’s potato)!

6. Prague
Vegan isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of Czech cuisine, but Prague is quickly becoming one of the most vegan friendly cities in Europe! With new vegan restaurants opening every year, Prague could be your next trip away!
This city is a perfect weekend getaway filled with history, colourful buildings and good food! Explore Prague Castle, walk over Charles Bridge or people-watch in Old Town Square.

7. Berlin
Berlin is known as the vegan capital of Europe and we can honestly agree. Alongside London, it is one of the most vegan friendly cities we’ve been to in Europe and we’ve visited three times (the third time was just to eat vegan food)!!
This city has almost every cuisine, and there’s pretty much a vegan version for all of it! Berlin even has its own vegan supermarket (Veganz) where you can find chocolate, fresh pastries and vegan meat alternatives!
With many vegan restaurants, cafes and options around the city, it can be very overwhelming to choose on a short visit. Here’s a few of our recommendations! (Also don’t forget to try vegan currywurst whilst you’re exploring the city)

8. Madrid
Madrid is a lovely city break for vegans in Europe. Although Barcelona is the most vegan friendly city in Spain, Madrid has incredible options too! In fact, both cities are thriving when it comes to vegan restaurants and options.
From vegan doughnuts to veganised Spanish foods, a trip to the capital of Spain will be a good one! Browse the many parks in the city, visit the Museo Nacional del Prado and experience the Spanish culture.

9. Brighton
Another city in the UK has made it onto our vegan cities in Europe list and for good reason! Along with all the amazing vegan options the UK offers, Brighton is home to some amazing vegan restaurants and cafes.
Brighton is also the perfect day trip from London if you’re only staying in the capital on your trip to the UK. Spend the day shopping in the lanes or relax on the pebbly beach! We absolutely love Brighton and always get excited about the food whenever we visit.

10. Warsaw
Another city in Poland makes our list! Warsaw is Poland’s capital city and it’s one of the most vegan friendly cities in Europe (and possibly the world)! We’ve already mentioned how amazing pierogi are, but in Warsaw, you can find a bit of anything!
On a city trip to Warsaw, walk around Lazienki Park and admire the Old Town Market Square. There’s so many fully vegan restaurants in Warsaw, it’s going to be hard to choose from. Here are a few recommendations to get you started.

11. Paris
It’s true that Paris is one of the most visited cities in Europe and there’s also a great vegan community here too! As veganism has become popular, more vegan restaurants have started opening up in Paris over the last few years.

12. Edinburgh
The UK is incredible for vegan food and Edinburgh lives up to the expectations. It’s not hard to find vegan options in the city and there’s plenty of vegan restaurants and cafes too!
Stay in the centre of old town and explore the Royal Mile whilst eating your heart out in vegan pizza, pastries and Vietnamese food. Edinburgh is a great choice for a weekend break in Europe!

13. Copenhagen
Another great vegan city in Europe is Copenhagen! Denmark’s capital may have a lot of meat-heavy restaurants but the vegan community is growing every year, which makes Copenhagen a lovely weekend trip!
Copenhagen is also an incredibly green city that makes an effort to help the environment and fight climate change. With this in mind, more vegan restaurants pop up every year and the food is amazing!

14. Budapest
Budapest is one of the best weekend trips in Europe and it makes it onto our vegan friendly European cities list for it’s easy to find vegan food.
Whilst hunting down vegan meals, take a walk next to the Danube or relax in one of the many thermal baths in the city. We highly recommend adding Budapest to your bucket list and you won’t have to worry about finding plant-based food,

15. Malmo
Next up, we’d like to introduce Malmo to this list – Sweden’s third-largest city and close to Copenhagen. Malmo is a great city to visit if you’re a vegan in Europe! There’s endless options when it comes to vegan options and the supermarkets in Sweden are stocked with goods too!
When it comes to prices, restaurants in Malmo are slightly less expensive than its neighbour Copenhagen, so if you’re on a budget – maybe consider a visit to Malmo!

16. Athens
If you haven’t visited Athens already, you need to add it to your list! This city is vegan heaven! We were completely surprised at all the vegan restaurants in Athens and the best part is, it’s all very affordable!
We spent 3 days in Athens exploring the historical sights and trying the local vegan cuisine. The city is small enough to walk around which is quite different to a lot of other cities on this list!

17. Barcelona
Barcelona is the capital and the vegan capital of Spain, with plenty of vegan options all over the city. It’s an incredible city break with many things to do, including great vegan food to try!

19. Ghent
Ghent is the vegan capital of Belgium with amazing options around every corner. Belgian cuisine isn’t known for being vegan friendly, but Ghent makes it seem easy to find vegan food in Belgium.
It’s also a great day trip from Brussels or Bruge if you’re only in Belgium for a short time. We recommend adding Ghent to your list and you won’t struggle with vegan food!

How to find vegan food in Europe?
Our top tip is to check Happy Cow for any vegan restaurants or at least vegan options before starting your day. We’ve mentioned some of the best city breaks for vegans and there’s still many more cities in Europe where you can find great food.
Don’t be afraid to ask the staff at any restaurant if there’s a vegan option or use Google Translate to ask if a dish is vegan friendly.
Supermarkets in Europe are always worth checking out for great vegan products. It’s easy to find vegan yoghurt and meat alternatives in the shops these days! This makes it easier to find breakfast or make a sandwich whilst travelling to areas where you’re not sure if there will be a vegan option.
