How to Travel as a Vegan in Krakow

Travelling and food go together perfectly! Have you ever tried Polish cuisine? It’s lovely!!

The first time we visited Poland was during our Europe interrailing trip and we only went to Warsaw (the capital city of Poland). Whilst we only spent 2 days there, we knew we had to try Polish dumplings – pierogi! We’ve been craving them ever since!

We’ve even tried to make our own pierogi with a mushroom and potato filling, it made us appreciate how hard it is to get the dough rolled out thin enough. Luckily we managed to find a few places selling pierogi’s around the world but ultimately Poland is the place to be to try authentic Polish food.

Similar to most countries in Europe, Polish cuisine seems very meat-orientated. However, there are restaurants in Krakow that do offer vegan alternatives and there are even 100% vegan restaurants in Krakow that have dishes inspired by Polish cuisine.

So the good news is if you’re a vegan in Krakow and want to try Polish food, there are still options! Here’s a few more tips for travelling as a vegan in Krakow:

Use Google Translate

Google Translate is one of our favourite free resources when travelling as a vegan! We usually use the scanning option with our camera and read ingredients and menus whenever we need to! It will translate Polish into English!

It usually works very well and you can feel confident about buying something. The main Polish words to avoid are mleko and jajko but here are a few more words to avoid:

mleko = milk / serwatka = whey / jajko = egg / żelatyna = gelatin / mleczarnia = dairy / miód = honey / wołowina = beef / kurczak = chicken / krewetka = shrimp / skorupiak = crustacean

Browse the Food Stores in Poland

If you’ve made it to our vegan in Krakow guide, you’re most likely looking for vegan restaurants. We can’t resist looking in grocery stored when we’re away and Poland have vegan-friendly options! There’s plant milk, vegan cookies, snacks and a variety of options!

The restaurants on this list may include a link to their menu. Hours of operation & menu items listed are subject to change. Check Google Maps before visiting a restaurant. This list is in no particular order!
