Tenerife is the largest island in the Canary Islands and the perfect escape for anyone living in Europe during the winter! The island is filled with tropical palm trees, beautiful nature-filled parks and incredible beaches. We’re here to share our 7 day Tenerife itinerary with you!
Whilst living in Gran Canaria for two months, we couldn’t resist planning an incredible road trip to Tenerife. We visited for my birthday in March and explored as much as possible in one week.
We drove around the island exploring hidden gems and the best places to visit so that we could create this Tenerife itinerary. The gorgeous island honestly blew us away and we’ve learnt so much about Tenerife!
Tenerife is well known for being a relaxing holiday destination with the majority of travellers staying in the south. But, the island has so much to offer! We encourage you to hire a car and explore the north!
During this Tenerife 7 day itinerary, we’ll take you to the most incredible spots around the island whilst basing ourselves in a few different accommodations (north and south). Although we’ve written this itinerary like a road trip, we’ll also share how to get around without a car along the way.

7 Day Tenerife Itinerary: The Best Road Trip
Now we’re excited to share our Tenerife road trip itinerary with you! Feel free to mix these days around if you want to stay at one accommodation. We travelled anti-clockwise around the island in a full loop, so we stayed at different accommodations along the way.
Day 1 – Arrive, Beaches & Santa Cruz de Tenerife
We arrived in the morning of our first day, but you can do the same activities if you arrive in the afternoon. Once we picked up our rental car, we headed straight to Hiper Dino to pick up some lunch supplies and then straight to the beach!
Arriving in Tenerife
We arrived at the North Airport in Tenerife, so it was 25 minutes to the first destination on this itinerary. If you’re arriving at the South Airport, you’ll have to drive around 1 hour, but it’s a great way to start this itinerary!
Relax at Playa de Las Teresitas
The first place to visit on your 7 days in Tenerife is Playa de Las Teresitas, a magnificent long beach in the north close to Santa Cruz de Tenerife. There’s lots of parking here although it can get pretty busy on the weekends and nice days.
Playa de las Teresitas is a curved golden sand beach lined with palm trees with towering cliffs on both sides. The water is especially amazing here as there are no waves! We spent some time chilling on the beach getting ready for the week ahead
Before leaving, visit Mirador Playa de las Teresitas for an impressive view of the beach from above. We sadly missed this spot due to a time issue, but we don’t want you to make that mistake!
Note – If you’re leaving Tenerife from the South Airport, you should visit Candelaria on your way to Playa de Las Teresitas as you won’t be passing by the town on day 7.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife
Only a 15-minute drive away from Playa de las Teresitas is the capital of Tenerife, Santa Cruz de Tenerife. It’s the biggest city on the island and the main port.
You don’t need to spend long here to get a taste of the city and you may want to get to your accommodation before the evening! Here’s a few things to do in the city if you have some time:
- Parque García Sanabria – a big green park in Santa Cruz
- Plaza de España – the main square with a lake!
- Mercado Ntra. Señora de África – the most popular market!
We recommend spending two nights in La Laguna during your 7 day Tenerife itinerary.
Where to stay in La Laguna:
- La Laguna Gran Hotel €€ – the best place to stay in the city with luxurious decor and a swimming pool – Find it on Booking.com here!
- La Asomada del Gato €€ – in the historic area of the city with a charming courtyard – Find it on Booking.com here!
➤ Find more places to stay in the La Laguna here.
Day 2 – Anaga Rural Park & La Laguna
Wake up early on the second day of your Tenerife itinerary to beat the crowds and tour buses at Anaga Rural Park. Although there’s restaurants in the park, we brought a packed lunch with us but you can also grab a sandwich in La Laguna the night before.
Discover Anaga Rural Park
Spend the day in Anaga Rural Park (Parque Rural de Anaga) exploring the mystic trees, incredible viewpoints and black sand beaches. Here’s how we spent our time in the park:
The first viewpoint you’ll come across is Mirador De Jardina which gives amazing views of Mt Teide on a clear day! We stopped for around 5-10 minutes admiring the views.
Next, head to the visitors centre (they have toilets!) and see the views at Mirador Cruz del Carmen. Here you’ll find a short and lovely trail called the Path of the Senses (Sendero de los Sentidos) and it’ll take you through winding trees in a large forest.
After this drive to the Mirador Pico del Inglés and walk through the Fairy Tunnel (Túnel de las hadas). It’s a long walkway with cliffs at either side making it feel like a rainforest tunnel.
Then drive to the small town of Taganana. We stopped at Mirador hacia Taganana on the way, but the viewpoint is quite overgrown now. It’s a pretty long drive down to Taganana but the viewpoints on the way down are worth it!
After Taganana, drive to Playa de Benijo, a beautiful black sand beach in the North. There are lots of parking spaces and the beach is pretty long. Also, check out El Mirador de Benijo to see impressive views of the cliffs!
Hikes in Anaga Rural Park – If you’d rather spend your time hiking instead of exploring the park by car, here’s a few we recommend:
- Roque de Taborno: Mirador Barranco la Fajana – 1.5 hour moderate/difficult hike
- Taganana: Playa de Tamadite – 3 hour moderate hike
- Las Carboneras: Chinamada – 2.5 hour moderate hike
San Cristóbal de La Laguna
After spending your first night in La Laguna, it’s now time to explore the city after a day of exploring nature.
La Laguna was the first city in Tenerife and originally the capital. It’s a lovely little city with a preserved old town, colourful houses and palm trees. The centre is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site! It’s the perfect place to add to visit during your 7 days in Tenerife.
We spent the late afternoon exploring the city and came across an incredible street lined with palm trees that you can’t miss on your visit! Head to Av. la Universidad to find them!
We recommend visiting Somo Lo Que Comemos for some healthy and wholesome Canarian food! I loved their daily menu with chickpeas, seitan, potato and a carrot cake for dessert!
Day 3 – Mount Teide
Tenerife is a hiker’s dream. The island is perfect for those who love mountainous hills, forests and beach trekking.
Visit Mount Teide National Park
Mt Teide is one of Europe’s most visited National Parks and tickets to reach the peak can be booked months in advance. Sadly, we planned our trip two months before and could not get these tickets, although we secured tickets on the cable car to reach the top station.
If you don’t book one in time on the website, find tickets on Get Your Guide here – Mount Teide Tour with Cable Car Ticket & Transfer!
Things to do in Mt Teide
- Drive through the park and stop at the viewpoints
- Learn about Mt Teide at the visitor’s centre
- Take the cable car to the top station (book in advance)
- Visit the peak (book free tickets four months in advance)
- Safely get a photo on the long strip of road with Mt Teide in the background.
- Join a Quad Adventure Tour in Teide National Park!
- Go hiking!
Hikes in Mt Teide
- Mirador Samara: Montaña Cruz de Tea – 3-hour moderate hike
- Sendero Roques de García and see Roques de García – 1.25-hour moderate hike
- Arenas Negras – 2.5-hour moderate hike
We visited Mt Teide on my birthday which made it extra special! It reminded me of the Caldera hike we did in Gran Canaria. The Mirador Samara was my favourite hike and you’ll need to get there early in the morning to find a parking spot. The roads can be quite curvy going up and down, but they’re completely safe.
There are also amazing tours to do if you don’t want to drive to the national park yourself. Here’s the most popular Teide National Park Tour with dinner, sunset and a glimpse of the stars.
Stargazing at Mt Teide
As Mt Teide is the highest point in Spain, it’s safe to say you’ll be right above the clouds and it’s the best spot on the island for stargazing!
We couldn’t resist an evening in the stars, so we went back up to the mountain around midnight (after the moon had set) and admired the star-filled sky.
There’s some awesome tours you can book with a guide and they’ll show you the sky through telescopes – here’s a stargazing tour to book in advance!
It gets quite cold on the mountain at night, so wrap up warm so you can watch the stars comfortably.
After a busy few days on our 7 day Tenerife itinerary, we decided to take the next morning a little more relaxed and stayed in Puerto de la Cruz for two nights.
➤ Book your Teide National Park Stargazing Tour here!
Where to stay in Puerto de la Cruz:
- Puerto Azul €-€€ – a lovely hotel with hot tubs on the roof, the perfect spot for sunbathing – Find it here on Booking.com!
- Apartamentos Masaru €-€€ – amazing rooms with balconies overlooking the ocean – Find it here on Booking.com!
➤ Find more places to stay in the Puerto de la Cruz here.
Day 4 – Puerto de la Cruz & La Oratava
This day will be a little more relaxed on your Tenerife road trip.
La Oratava
Start your day with a visit to La Oratava, one of Tenerife’s delightful towns. This town is only a 15-minute drive away from Puerto de la Cruz, so you won’t need to do much driving today!
La Oratava is filled with architecture from the Canary Islands architecture. Here’s a few places to visit during your visit: Casa de los Balcones (€6), Casa Lercaro (for food), Garden Hijuela del Botánico (free) and Marquesado de la Quinta Roja Garden (free).
Puerto de la Cruz
Next up, we’d like to introduce one of our cities in Tenerife. Puerto de la Cruz is home to lovely black-sand beaches, delicious restaurants and beautiful street murals. There’s a lot of charm throughout the city and it’s the perfect base for exploring the surrounding area.
We fell in love with the old town area that’s filled with street murals! It reminded us of our time in Penang when we explored Georgetown – the town famous for its art murals!
The volcanic black sand beaches here are the perfect way to end your afternoon if it’s a sunny day! Playa del Castillo was our favourite and we still can’t get over the black sand, it’s so cool!
Things to do in Puerto de la Cruz
- Explore the street art – Head to ‘Ro-Ro Tenerife Street Art’
- Mirador La Paz – amazing viewpoint showcasing the beach
- Lago Martiánez – have fun in the saltwater pools (€5.50)
- Playa del Castillo – chill at the black sand beach
- Playa de Martiánez – a rocky black sand beach
- Plaza del Charco – a bustling square in Puerto Cruz
- Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Peña de Francia – visit the catholic church
When looking for food in Puerto de la Cruz, you have a lot of choices! Our recommendations are Manipura Restaurante for its incredible vegan pasta dishes and Machamama for its nutritious shakes.
Day 5 – Spanish Towns, Nature & Beaches
On day five of this Tenerife itinerary, we changed accommodation one last time to be closer to the south.
There’s a lot more driving planned for this day of the Tenerife road trip with curvy roads and lots of altitude.
Icod de los Vinos
Visit the enchanting town of Icod de los Vinos in the morning of day five. You’ll only need a couple of hours to soak up the atmosphere and nature this town has to offer.
Icod de los Vinos is home to the famous Dragon Tree in Tenerife and it is within a beautiful botanical garden. It’s the main highlight of the town along with a banana plantation museum and the colourful streets of the town.
If you don’t want to pay for the botanical garden or don’t have enough time to visit, you can see the Dragon Tree from the plaza! You can also dine at Casa del Drago for a lovely view of the tree.
Visit Garachico
Another historical town to visit on your way to the south of Tenerife is Garachico!
We chose to visit this place due to the incredible natural pools and the lovely Liberty Square. If you’re brave you can swim in these pools, but the water looked fierce that day! Plus it looks cold!
There’s lots of parking along the seafront and it’s worth a visit during your 7 days in Tenerife.
➤ Here’s the 22 Best Things to do in Tenerife!
Abama Beach
When we arrived at our tiny house our host gave us a recommendation to visit Abama Beach! So this is a local recommendation! Abama Beach is right next to the picturesque Ritz-Carlton Hotel and there is free parking here too.
It’s about a 15-minute walk from the car park and the spaces can fill up quickly. The beach itself is in a beautiful cove and there’s even a restaurant down there.
Playa San Juan
We stumbled across Playa San Juan when searching for vegan options on Happy Cow. The place we were staying at was only 15 minutes up the road, so we drove down to Playa San Juan for the evening.
The restaurant (Cafetería Macedonia Fruit Cafe) is right on the seafront and we ended up eating a lovely affordable meal with a sunset view! It was one of those ‘pinch-me’ moments.
We walked along the promenade and there’s also a pebbly beach here if you’d rather visit here instead of Abama Beach.
If you haven’t done so already, it’s time to check into your new accommodation. We stayed in the loveliest house on wheels in Guía de Isora!
It was so unique and felt like we were camping. The host was so lovely and answered all of our questions about Tenerife!
Base yourself somewhere for another two nights or head back to your previous accommodation if you’d rather. Here’s our recommendations of where to stay, including the tiny home!
Where to stay in South Tenerife:
- Mini Casa Finca Arcoiris €€ – the perfect tiny home on the hills of Tenerife – Find it on Booking.com here!
- Wyndham Residences Costa Adeje €€ – a lovely resort with a swimming pool – Find it on Booking.com here!
- Ocean Nomads Coworking € – an oceanside dorm with amazing amenities – Find it on Booking.com here.
➤ Find more places to stay in the South of Tenerife here.
Day 6 – Masca, Cliffs & Southern Beaches
At this point during our 7 day Tenerife itinerary, we were pretty amazed at everything the island offers. Day 6 blew us away, starting with the most incredible village in the Canary Islands!
Start your day early to beat the crowds, we recommend getting to Masca Village at 8 am if possible. When we were driving away from the village, we saw so many minibuses and cars driving towards Masca that were definitely not going to find a parking spot.
Admire Masca Village
Masca is described as the Machu Picchu of Tenerife nestled away in the cliffs with an incredible backdrop. It’s a small mountain village that has become popular over the years and you can really see why!
Due to Masca village being a popular spot, we recommend visiting before 9 am or after 4 pm to secure a parking spot (for free) and beat the huge amounts of crowds from tour buses.
The view of the village itself was the best part of our visit and we couldn’t help but take so many photos! We watched the sun rise over the mountain behind us and warm up the houses built on the small strip of rock. There’s quite a few restaurants here, but we arrived too early.
If you have more time you can hike down to Playa de Masca which involves walking through a beautiful rocky gorge to a pebbly beach. You can then climb back up or get a boat to another village.
The hike is called Camino del Barranco de Masca and is rated hard due to the climb back up. It will also take 4-5 hours.
How to get to Masca? Head to Santiago del Teide and follow the signs to Masca. The road to reach the village is a little challenging if you’re not used to serpentine driving. We’d already experienced a lot of this so far in Tenerife, so it felt quite natural when driving.
However, the roads are tight! It can get really busy in the daytime and you may have to wait for other cars to pass.
Book a day tour to visit Teide, Icod de los Vinos, Garachico & Masca if you’re worried about driving!
Los Gigantes
After driving back up the serpentine road, make your way to Los Gigantes!
The first place to stop is Mirador Archipenque for the incredible views of the west cliffs of Tenerife. The Los Gigantes Cliffs are definitely worth visiting on your 7 day Tenerife itinerary!
We walked around the marina and checked out Playa de los Guios before heading to our next destination. There is a paid car park near the marina but we just found some free street parking.
Whilst you’re in the area, check out Charco de Isla Cangrejo if the tide is out. These are man-made ‘natural’ saltwater pools next to the ocean that are lovely for dipping. If the sea is rough or the tide is in, it’s not safe to go in the water! We’ve heard some horror stories.
Playa de Torviscas
After a busy morning of exploring, it’s finally time to chill at the beach. The south of Tenerife has a lot of beaches to choose from so we’ll leave our recommendations below!
- Playa de Torviscas
- Playa del Duque
- Playa de Los Cristianos
- Playa de las Américas for Surfing – Book your Surf Lesson here!
We grabbed lunch at Origins and spent some time sunbathing at Playa de Torviscas, the water is super nice here too!
Around the South of Tenerife, there’s a lot of dolphin and whale-watching tours.
As ethical and vegan bloggers, we only recommend tours we feel comfortable with. Here’s a No Chase Whale & Dolphin Tour that focuses on looking after animals whilst allowing travellers to see the animals in their natural habitat. There’s also a Kayaking and Snorkeling with Turtles Tour.
Day 7 – Hiking, Beaches & Lovely Towns
During our Tenerife itinerary, our flight left Tenerife at 7 pm which meant we had all day to continue exploring the island! Use this day to tick off any final things on your Tenerife bucket list (like going Paragliding!!) or use our suggestions!
Barranco del Infierno
Barranco del Infierno is one of the most popular hikes in the very south of Tenerife. It’s a 3-hour moderate to hard hike. It can get pretty hot during the day so either start your hike really early or late in the day.
Alternatively, there’s also a banana plantation to check out in Tenerife! We’ve visited one in Gran Canaria and loved it! Here’s the best things to do in Gran Canaria.
Playa de El Médano
One of the last stops on this Tenerife itinerary is a trip to another beautiful beach in the south. Playa de El Médano has a lovely promenade, lots of water sports activities and lots of restaurants to fill you up before your flight!
You can even do a 50-minute Submarine Dive to see the underwater world!
Wander around Candelaria
As we were heading back to the North Airport, we stopped off at the small city of Candelaria on the way. It won’t take long to explore the sights of the town and admire the Basilica of Our Lady of Candelaria.
This church was the first church in the Canaries dedicated to the Virgin Mary! The architecture and decor inside are worth a visit.
We grabbed some Spanish tortillas at Plan Bakery Cafe and then hit the road towards the airport!

How to get around Tenerife in 7 days
As this is a 7 day Tenerife road trip itinerary, we recommend renting a car. Use Discover Cars to find the vehicle of your choice and check prices! Here’s a few other options if you don’t want to drive during your trip.
TITSA Buses – This is the local public transport in Tenerife and you can visit some amazing places using them! You can buy Travel Cards for €2 which allows you to buy a 1 day pass for €10 or a 7 day pass for €50. Alternatively, you can just pay contactless on the bus.
Tours – Once you’ve decided on the city or town you’ll base yourself in, you can book tours to go on adventures around the island. As much as we prefer travelling ourselves, tours are a great way to meet other travellers and get around without the worry of driving.
How many days in Tenerife
Even though the island looks small, it’s packed with amazing things to do. We highly recommend spending at least 5 days in Tenerife to experience the variety!
Do you have more time in Tenerife? that’s great! You won’t run out of things to do, we’ve included some alternative ideas that you can add to this itinerary if you have more than five days.
If you only have 3 days, you should prioritise what you want to do as you won’t be able to complete this Tenerife itinerary with less time.
With 3 days you could stick to the North if you love hiking, as there are lovely beaches, nature parks and lovely Spanish towns. If you love the heat, make your way down south to explore the white sand beaches whilst spending a day in Mt Teide National Park.
How to get to Tenerife
It’s pretty easy to get to Tenerife from anywhere in Europe as the island has two airports and ferry terminals.
The North Airport is mainly domestic whilst the South Airport is international for the huge number of tourists after Tenerife’s beautiful beaches and nightlight.
By Plane – Fly into one of two airports in Tenerife to start your road trip itinerary. Check flights on Skyscanner and book directly with the airport.
You may find flights connecting through other Spanish cities! It’s best to fly into the North Airport for this itinerary, but the South works well too!
By Ferry – The main ferry port in Tenerife is located in Santa Cruz, you can arrive from the famous neighbouring island of Gran Canaria. If you’re visiting Tenerife from La Gomera, El Hierro or La Palma, there’s a port at Los Cristianos in the south.
Best time to visit Tenerife
Tenerife has a lovely mild climate all year round! In the winter months from December to February have an average of 20°C, whilst the summer months (June – September) can get up to 30°C.
The best time to visit Tenerife is between October and May due to this being outside of the ‘summer holidays’ in Europe.
We visited in March and the weather was hot in the day and chilly in the evenings! Make sure you bring a jacket.
What to pack for 7 days in Tenerife
It’s best to bring clothes that you’d wear in the ‘Spring’ and ‘Summer’ seasons.
When we visited in March, the island felt hot in the daytime but cold in the morning and at night. We went stargazing and did not pack enough warm layers – so make sure you bring a thermal or jacket if you’re planning on seeing the stars from Mt Teide!
Tenerife has lots of shopping centres if you forget anything for your trip! We always find that suncream is cheaper back in our home country (the UK), but you can find lots of suncream in Tenerife.
