Where to stay if you’re a vegan in Athens

The best area to stay in Athens is around Monastiraki. Athens is a very walkable city and unless your accommodation is outside of the centre, you won’t need to use public transport. Here are a few places we recommend:

  • Niki Athens Hotel €€-€€€ – This is the perfect place for a vegan in Athens as the hotel is connected to Winners Vegan Restaurant and also close to more vegan spots. They offer free breakfast including vegan pancakes, yoghurt and more! Find on Booking.com here!
  • The Monumental House € – Right in the heart of Athens! We stayed here for 3 nights and loved it! There’s a shared kitchen to use and we also had a balcony. The owner also has two cats! Find on Booking.com here!

They add fresh potato wedges to their mushroom gyros and it’s absolutely amazing! It’s also the first Vegan Souvlaki & Grill restaurant in Athens. We highly recommend any of the gyros because they all look amazing (we chose the ‘red’ one)!

Yi

Vegan organic & gluten-free restaurant in Athens €€

Yi is one of the most incredible vegan restaurants we’ve ever been to! They really care about their food, menu and customers. They serve 100% organic vegan and gluten-free food in Athens with most of the dishes on the menu also being raw.

The restaurant is located near the Athens Riviera outside of the city centre. We took a trip to the beaches by public transport, so it’s definitely possible to visit Yi on a short Athens visit.

Vegan Food at Grocery Stores in Athens

There are a few organic and vegan-friendly stores around the city, including one next to Avocado restaurant. Besides the small Bazaar shops, we didn’t visit any big stores in Athens. There were too many vegan restaurants in Athens to try!

It’s worth checking out Sklavenitis, Lidl and ΑΒ whilst you’re in Athens for a while, although, most of them are outside the city centre.

All of them sell plant milk, fresh vegetables and legumes. If there are not many options for vegan alternatives such as vegan meat or vegan cheese, it may be best to visit the organic shops around Athens centre.

Vegan food in Athens at the Airport

Whilst at the airport we spotted a few vegan options in our terminal. Starbucks had a cake (and plant milk as always) and a Greek chain had some pies!

If you’re heading to the airport from Athens we recommend grabbing a sandwich from Tupaki or a falafel wrap to go – the prices will be better and it’s a more filling meal!

Is the Greek Cuisine Vegan Friendly

Surprisingly Greek cuisine can be very vegan-friendly! Many dishes are using fresh vegetables and legumes and they are very tasty.

Orthodox Christians follow a very plant-based diet during Lent (around February to April). This is also similar to other countries in Eastern Europe.

A few dishes you can find throughout Greece are Stuffed Grape Leaves (Dolmades), Olive Bread & Greek Pita, Fava Bean Spread, Spinach Pies (Spanakopita), Stuffed Peppers or Tomatoes (Gemista), Veggieballs (Tomatokeftedes), White beans in Tomato Sauce (Gigantes) and much more!

Athens is the best place in Greece to find fully vegan restaurants, but there are also options on the islands and throughout the mainland.

You can also buy fresh koulouri (Simits), seeds, nuts and dried fruit from small stands throughout Athens – which is perfect if you need a quick snack! Also, the fresh orange juice is delicious!
