How to find Vegan Thai Food in Phuket
Happy Cow and Google Maps come in very helpful for finding vegan food when travelling. However, we have realised not all vegan restaurants appear. Luckily Thailand has a word for vegan – ‘Jay’ Buddhist vegan food. When walking down streets, look out for red and yellow signs with the Thai word (เจ) – it looks like a 17! Or sometimes the Chinese character (齋) will be the sign for a vegan restaurant.
There are a few Jay restaurants in Phuket, and we’ll show you them in this vegan restaurants in Phuket guide! Another way to find vegan food in Phuket is to look out for vegetarian Thai food and ask if it’s vegan, usually by omitting the egg.
How to order food as a Vegan in Thailand (Phuket)
When ordering vegan food in Phuket at any non-vegan restaurant, you’ll have to let them know you’re vegetarian and vegan if they don’t have a vegetarian menu. How to say I’m Vegan in Thai? – For ‘females’ “chan ghin jay” & for ‘males’ “pom ghin jay”.
Vegan Thai Dishes (That are popular in Thailand):
- Pak Boong (Morning Glory)
- Pad Phak (Stir-Fried Vegetables)
- Thai Mango Sticky Rice (The best vegan dessert in Thailand)
- Thai Green/Red Vegetable Curry (with Tofu)
- Thai Massaman Vegetable Curry (with Tofu)
Thai Dishes that can be made Vegan:
- Vegetarian Pad Thai – with no egg
- Pineapple Fried Rice – with no egg
- Vegetarian Khao Soi – no fish sauce (a Northern Thai dish)
- Vegetarian Papaya Salad – no fish sauce
- Vegetable Fried Rice
There are many Thai dishes that can be made vegan, such as many soups, noodle dishes and vegetable dishes!

You will always find vegetables and rice or vegetable fried rice, just make sure they don’t add an egg!
