Hong Kong is a city full of incredible history, tall skyscrapers, tasty dim sum and trendy cafes!
We’re so excited to share our 3 day Hong Kong itinerary as it was one of our favourite cities in Asia! We would visit Hong Kong again in a heartbeat.
There are so many things to do in Hong Kong whether you want to spend your days exploring temples, hiking or strolling around the old and modern streets! It’s home to over 260 islands with a lot of them being inhabited and Kowloon being part of the mainland.
Hong Kong is located south of mainland China and technically isn’t a country. From 1842 – 1997, Hong Kong was ruled by Britain after China lost the Opium Wars. After the official 100 year lease ended, Hong Kong was given back to China with the agreement that it would function under the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ rule, meaning while it’s officially listed as China, it would operate with its own government and border control.
It’s important to know that people from Hong Kong will generally identify as Hong Konger’s rather than Chinese, and not to assume they are one of the same.
During our 3 days in Hong Kong, we explored two beautiful islands and we’ll show you exactly how to get there! We did fall in love with the rustic and authentic old streets though, so we’ll also show you which neighbourhoods to explore!
Let’s get into our in-depth Hong Kong travel guide full of tips and the best places to visit in 3 days.

Here’s the link to Airalo E-Sims too. Alternatively, you can pick up Sim cards from shops and markets around the city.

3 Day Hong Kong Itinerary – Best Things To Do
Now we’ll jump into our 3 day Hong Kong Itinerary! As our first day was a Saturday, we chose to visit the famous Peak Tram on a weekday instead.
So the first day of our Hong Kong itinerary can be mixed around if you’d rather swap day 3 for day 1. Either way, our first day in Hong Kong was amazing and we’re excited to share our route!
Day 1 – Temples, Old Districts, Markets & the Skyline
On day one we’ll show you the beautiful temples of Hong Kong along with an authentic neighborhood. You’ll finish the night walking along the waterside admiring the impressive skyline!
We started the day with a quick 7-Eleven breakfast of soy milk and some random sweet buns that happened to be vegan.
Visit Chi Lin Nunnery
Start the day with a peaceful visit to the Chi Lin Nunnery in the North East of Kowloon.
The Monastery was first built on the land of an old mansion in 1934. Entry is free and you probably won’t need much more than 30 – 60 minutes to have a good look around.
It’s very peaceful wandering around the grounds, admiring all of the bonsai trees and lotus ponds.

Wander through Nan Lian Garden
Luckily, you can walk out of the main entrance of the Chi Lin Nunnery and drop straight into Nan Lian Garden!
Entrance to Nan Lian Garden is also free, and equally as peaceful as Chi Lin Nunnery.
It’s another great place to start your day feeling zen! It’s quite small so you’ll be able to walk around in 20 minutes.
Explore Kowloon Walled City Park
Next up on this 3 day Hong Kong Itinerary, walk over to the Kowloon Walled City Park. The walk between the over was cool, and showed us some parts of Hong Kong we wouldn’t have otherwise seen!
After World War II the city of Kowloon became completely lawless due to the lack of government. The walled city contained dangerous tall buildings and major crime problems. This lasted from 1948 to 1987 until the small city was torn down in 1993.
It’s now a beautiful garden with a few monuments to remember the crazy past.
Check out the City of Thousand Faces – a bronze little sculpture of the past walled city. There’s also a small area where you can find the original walls of the city!

Take a photo at Choi Hung Estate Rooftop Basketball Court
Also in the north of Kowloon is the incredibly photogenic basketball court! Head over to Choi Hung Estate to see the iconic court with a backdrop of a colourful apartment block.
This is still a local basketball court being used so be respectful when taking photos!
Admire Sik Sik Yuen Wong Tai Sin Temple
Now head over to the Sik Sik Yuen Wong Tai Sin Temple in Hong Kong! It’s a unique temple with three religions (Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism).
We loved seeing the koi’s in the pond and walking over the bridges on the water! It’s definitely a different type of temple compared to others we’ve seen in China or Thailand.
The complex was built in 1973 so it’s just over 50 years old and it’s easy to wander around. As we visited around midday, it was quite busy with your groups.

Visit Old School Hong Kong at Sham Shui Po
After this, we caught the metro over to Sham Shui Po neighbourhood. It’s one of the oldest, most densely populated and authentic neighbourhoods in Hong Kong with lots of atmosphere.
We ended up visiting this neighbourhood three times during our 3 days in Hong Kong for food! We had an awesome lunch at Sin Sin Fang, trying vegan BBQ pork!
There’s a big street market running through the neighbourhood and many indoor centres like the Golden Computer Mall! We also love the bean curd shop which has amazing soy milk.

➤ Check out our 3 Day Kuala Lumpur Itinerary if you’re visiting Malaysia!
Explore Mong Kok
Next on this Hong Kong itinerary, walk down to the Monk Kok district to explore the shops and bustling markets.
The area is filled with major shops and outdoor markets. Here you’ll find the famous Ladies Market filled with souvenir gifts and affordable clothes.
There’s lots of chaotic streets in Mong Kok but it’s definitely worth visiting during your 3 days in Hong Kong. You can also see remnants of old neon signs dotted around as most of them were removed.

Spend the evening in Tsim Sha Tsui
Tsim Sha Tsui is the main area of Hong Kong with the best shopping, nightlife and accommodation. We stayed in a hostel (Hop Inn) here!
You’ll find any kind of shopping here from malls to street markets and Tsim Sha Tsui has one of the most expensive shopping streets in Asia! Check out K11 Art Mall!
It’s also the area where you’ll find the famous promenade with skyline views, but we’ll get onto that shortly!
If you have time check out Kowloon Park and Kowloon Mosque. Just inside the park is Comic Stars Street, featuring lots of comic character statues. There’s a nice place to chill by the little lakes of terrapins.
We explored the park on the day that we left in the early morning and the mosque is viewed from outside anyway.

Check out Chung King Mansions
In Tsim Sha Tsui you’ll find a few tall mansions that are pretty old now. We almost booked a hotel at Chungking Mansions before we started reading the reviews!
The building is incredibly populated with a mixture of residents and hotels or hostels inside. It’s not in the best condition!
We walked through the ground floor where we found a crazy amount of Indian food stalls and cheap shops. It’s an interesting place to see anyway!
Admire the Hong Kong Skyline
End your day with a night walk along one of the best skylines in the world. It has pretty close completion with the Shanghai’s Bund View.
Along the promenade, you’ll easily spot the old Clock Tower and you can also follow to see the Avenue of the Stars. We saved this celebrity walk for another day and focused on the night show!
We have to mention the Hong Kong Pulse 3D light show in this 3 day Hong Kong itinerary. It’s not that good but it’s a little nice to see as you wander down the promenade anyway.

If you fancy, you can hop on a Victoria Harbour Night Cruise and watch the skyline from the water! Rest well before day two of this Hong Kong itinerary! Every day is packed with busy activities!
Don’t forget to buy an E-Sim for your time in Hong Kong!
Day 2 – Cable Cars, Big Buddha & Tai O Village
Even though we were still getting used to Hong Kong city life, we jumped on a metro and headed for the largest island in Hong Kong – Lantau Island. We highly recommend visiting at least once during your 3 days in Hong Kong as it’s so easy to get to.
The island has breathtaking views and you’ll get to see a unique side of Hong Kong! Plus you’ll get to try a lot of different transport to get around from cable cars to ferries, buses and metros!
We left Kowloon around 9 am and caught the metro to Tung Chung. From there we caught the Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car (We booked our one-way tickets on Trip with a discount for £15-18 per person)
Admire the views on the Ngong Ping Cable Car
Start your morning by seeing the most incredible views of Hong Kong’s nature. As we just mentioned, make your way to Tung Chung Station and jump on a one-way Cable Car heading to Ngong Ping Village.
You can book return tickets for the Cable Car, but for this 3 day Hong Kong itinerary, you won’t be going back on the Cable Car, so get one way! There’s even a Crystal Carriage with windows all around the Cable Car. These looked incredible but they do cost a little more money.
The journey on the Cable Car took 25 minutes and we saw glimpses of Tian Tan Buddha on the way!

Skip the queue and buy your Ngong Ping Cable Car Tickets in advance! They’re sometimes cheaper too! For this itinerary, book a one-way ticket! You can also find tickets on Klook if you prefer to use Klook!
Wander through Ngong Ping Village
You’ll arrive at Ngong Ping Village straight away from the Cable Car. The village is full of little souvenirs and shops. There’s also a 7-Eleven if you want to grab a snack! We brought some onigiri from hana-musubi back in Kowloon to eat along the way.
It may be best to browse the village and shops after your lunch before leaving the area!
Say hello to the Tian Tan Buddha
Now you’ll finally be able to climb the steps to see the Tian Tan Buddha up close. The steps are quite steep but not too bad and the views from the top are awesome! You can visit inside the base of the Buddha to learn some information.
Tian Tian Buddha was built by the Po Lin Monastery (which we’ll show you next) and it’s the world’s tallest outdoor seated bronze Buddha! There’s also a first for everything! The building of the Buddha took 12 years and it’s since become a highlight for people visiting Hong Kong!
It can get pretty busy here, especially right in front of the Buddha where the stairs are.

Visit the Po Lin Monastery
In the same complex as the Buddha, you’ll find Po Lin Monastery – home to the Grand Hall of Ten Thousand Buddhas. Po Lin Monastery was originally established in 1906 by three monks. It’s another popular sight to see on Lantau Island and it’s free!
There’s a vegetarian restaurant serving a sit-down meal for $150. But we also found a small veggie deli right next door to the monastery with food for $30 or $45. The Deli serves amazing dim sum from noodles, char sui bao and dumplings! We also tried Mango Sago which is so refreshing on a hot day!

Follow the Wisdom Path Trail
Next up on our 3 day Hong Kong itinerary is a lovely walk into nature! There’s so much hiking to do here, but we didn’t have enough time to continue on a longer trail. Luckily the Wisdom Path Trail takes around 30 minutes to complete there and back.
The walk to the Wisdom path is relaxing and very tropical with so many butterflies! At the end, you’ll find wooden columns that have carved verses from Heart Sutra (Buddhism).

➤ Check out our 3 Month Southeast Asia trip for more travel itineraries!
Explore Tai O Village
Head back to Ngong Ping Village and find the bus station just behind some of the shops. You’ll want to wait at the number 21 Bus stop for the bus heading for Tai O Village. For some reason it’s slightly more expensive on a Sunday so we paid $17 per person, but it’s cheaper on other days of the week. You can use your Octopus Card to pay!
The journey was surprisingly only 15 minutes as the driver zoomed down the hill!
Tai O Village was a lovely little place to explore during our 3 days in Hong Kong. The village dates back to the Ming dynasty era back in 1368-1644.
We spent a few hours exploring this little fishing village, most of it is now spruced up and catered towards tourism, but we also noticed the deeper we walked, the more local and residential it became, so be careful not to accidentally walk into someone’s home.
What’s special about Tai O Fishing Village is the community that lives on stilts above the water! It’s definitely something to see for yourself. They use boats to get around, but most of them are connected to the mainland by bridges. We’ll show you some other things to do in Tai O Village!

Walk along Tai O Promenade
When we first arrived at Tai O Bus Station we headed straight for the promenade to see the lovely coast! We walked along the whole bridge and followed the loop round back to the bus station. We saw dragon fruit and bananas growing in gardens, it was so wholesome.
Grab a snack at Tai O Bakery
When exploring the village area on stilts, you’ll find loads of shops, cafes, and restaurants with views of the village. We passed by Tai O Bakery which had a long queue for their famous Donuts!
Sadly for us, they aren’t vegan, but we tried peanut sesame mochi and mango mochi and fell in love! We went back for another fresh mango mochi before we left.
Find the many cats in the village
Tai O Village has a small cat sanctuary where street cats can find comfort. The cats can come and go as they please so we saw so many relaxing around. They’re adorable!
We also walked to Tai O Public Pier and back along a beautiful route. There are quite a few trails to do from Tai O Village but again we didn’t have enough time. So this little trail is a lovely way to make the most out of your nature day before heading back to the city.

You’ll also find boats offering White or Pink Dolphin sightseeing tours out in the ocean, but we’re not sure if it’s really guaranteed.
From Tai O Village you can take the bus or ferry back to Tung Chung Station where you can take the metro back to Hong Kong. We managed to get the slow ferry which took around 40 minutes to get to Tung Chung. It’s a pretty long day but totally worth it!
Browse Temple Street Night Market
One of the most popular markets in Hong Kong is Temple Street Night Market! It’s full of street food, clothes, travel gifts and more! It’s worth a visit during your Hong Kong 3 day itinerary. It’s a very photogenic market though!

Day 3 – Victoria Peak Tram, Central & Skyline Sunsets
Next on this 3 day Hong Kong itinerary, we’ll be showing you the best things to do in Hong Kong Island.
This day has some pretty strong highlights for us! Grab some breakfast from 7/11, a local cafe or your accommodation and head to the ferry terminal! It’s going to be a busy day!
Take the Star Ferry to Hong Kong Island
Start your morning with an early ferry ride over to Hong Kong Island, especially Central.
The journey took around 15 minutes and you’ll get to ride one of the very popular 60’s ferries! It’s all very vintage with folding wooden benches. It’s one of the best things to do in Hong Kong!
Ride the Victoria Peak Tram
The Peak Tram is one of the oldest funicular railways in the world as it reaches almost 400 metres. You won’t be able to stand straight on this tram as it ascends pretty diagonally most of the way!
The tram first opened in 1888 and you can see an old tram on your way up. The new trams have been designed to look like the old ones, which is pretty clever!
We arrived at the Peak Tram station around 8:30 am and it was so peaceful and quiet. Our tram was very empty so we asked the staff which side had the best views! They told us to sit on the right side heading up and the left side heading down.
We highly recommend booking your tickets on Klook so you can skip the queues! You can also find tickets on Trip!

Walk the Hong Kong Trail
As we arrived really early the sky terrace wasn’t open yet (it opens at 10 am) so we took the opportunity to enjoy one of the trails at the Peak.
Victoria Peak has incredible views from the very top but we chose to walk the Hong Kong Trail for panoramic views of Hong Kong without breaking a sweat!
The Hong Kong Trail takes about an hour with some stops and photos. We saw lots of locals walking dogs or running. As we reached the end of the trail we definitely noticed it getting busier closer to 10 am.

Admire the views from The Peak Tower
Finally, at 10 am, it’s time to see one of the most famous sights in Hong Kong! Sky Terrace 428 has some of the best views on the peak, but it’s not essential for getting a great view.
We added these tickets onto our Peak Tram tickets as they were pretty affordable you can also see good views at the free Victoria Peak’s Lions Pavilion.
We would say the Sky Terrace is worth it though! Luckily we had amazing views after a slightly hazy morning. It was a highlight of our 3 day Hong Kong itinerary.
As well as the viewing platform, there’s a sort of mall at the top, if you find yourself needing some or going shopping (7-Eleven included).

Visit Hong Kong Park
We originally didn’t have this park on our list of things to do in Hong Kong, so were pleasantly surprised when we discovered it! It’s right outside the exit of the peak tram and the park has an aviary and an observatory.
Hong Kong Park is home to the most amazing bird aviary. We would never pay for zoos, but as it was free, we chose to have a lovely walk through and see tropical birds. It’s huge, so we felt the birds have a somewhat wild-feeling life. The park itself is very tropical so it was a real treat to explore!

➤ Want to see more of North Asia? Here’s our 2 week South Korea itinerary!
Take the Central-Mid-Levels Escalators
The mid-level escalator is less of an attraction and more of a mode of transport. It helps travellers get up the steep hills of Hong Kong Island without the need to walk.
The reason it’s so well known is because it’s very very long. It’s a good way to get to the next destination on our Hong Kong itinerary!
Explore the Tai Kwun Complex
During our 3 day Hong Kong itinerary we visited Tai Kwun Complex without realising it’s the old Hong Kong Police Headquarters with jail cells! It’s free to visit which is awesome. The prison closed around 2006 and is now a preserved museum.
We walked around the old cell blocks and learned all the reasons why people were jailed, luckily some of the laws have changed now! You can also find art installations here.

Wander down Hollywood Road
During your 3 days in Hong Kong, take a stroll down Hollywood Road and spot all the antique shops!
On Elgin Street and Staunton Street, you’ll also find Soho! This area of Hong Kong is so vibrant and full of life! You’ll see all the beautiful murals and maybe some people posing on these streets!

Admire the Man Mo Temple
Man Mo Temple is a beautifully authentic Taoist Temple on Hong Kong Island. Head west on Hollywood Road and you’ll come across it easily!
It’s marked as a historic monument in Hong Kong and it really stands out in the modern area! You’ll find locals praying and burning incense. There are also unique incense spirals burning inside! It’s worth a visit during your 3 days in Hong Kong.

Ride a Tram (a Ding Ding)
For lunch, we decided to visit LN Coffee to try their incredible char sui and vegan egg meal! It was a little out of the way and Google Maps told us to use a tram!
Luckily for us we now had a reason to use the infamous Ding Dings of Hong Kong!
Whenever you feel like it, jump on a tram to take you down the main street in Central. They aren’t the fastest mode of transport, but they’re so cool to experience. Dan was also obsessed with taking photos of them, they’re all different colours!

Visit Central Market
One of the last things to do on Hong Kong island (on this 3 day itinerary) is to browse Central Market.
This market is full of little boutique shops selling anything from anime figures to handicraft items. It won’t take long to explore, so it’s worth checking out
After a full day of exploring, we chose to catch the Star Ferry across Victor Harbour back to Kowloon.

Walk along Avenue of Stars
From the ferry, watch the sunset from the harbourside and see Central light up! It’s the perfect way to end your 3 day Hong Kong itinerary! Walk along the skyline following the Avenue of Stars and see if you can find a celebrity you recognise! You can also do this on day one, but we ended up coming back.

Where to stay in Hong Kong
There are a few great areas to stay when spending 3 days in Hong Kong! We recommend anywhere in Tsim Sha Tsui on Kowloon for the most affordable accommodation. It’s also the perfect area to get around and walk around.
If you can, try to avoid hotels or hostels in Chungking Mansions and Mirador Mansion as we’ve heard the buildings are not the nicest. We also recommend Central on Hong Kong Island as it’s perfect for eateries and nightlife.
Hop Inn – We stayed here during our 3 day Hong Kong itinerary. It’s in the perfect location with great amenities. We stayed in a dorm but they also have private rooms – Find it on Agoda here!
Yesinn @YMT – Another great location in Hong Kong but closer to Mong Kok. There’s a dorm and private rooms and the place is really clean – Find it on Agoda here!

Vegan Places in Hong Kong
We loved the food in Hong Kong! When we first opened Happy Cow, it was pretty overwhelming with options and then we found out some meals can cost £15 for one! After not spending more than £15 for a whole meal for two in China, we tried to find some budget-friendly options. We highly recommend Sin Sin Fong and Veggie Factory!
- Sin Sin Fong – we ate here twice, the laksa with dumplings and vegan Shumai are amazing!
- Veggie Factory – an affordable buffet where you choose two or three dishes, so good!
- Mother Pearl & Nuttea – they both do amazing vegan bubble tea (multiple locations)
- Veggie Kingdom – incredible dim sum in Hong Kong (reservation recommended)
- LN Fortunate Coffee – amazing Asian fusion and Western food with vegan bubble waffles!
- Hana Musubi – tasty onigiri shop with three vegan options (multiple locations)

➤ Visiting the Philippines? Here’s our Manila Travel Guide to start your trip!
How to get to Hong Kong
By Plane – Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) is one of the busiest airports in the world and is popular for layovers. We flew out of the airport and there’s really good links to the city centre.
How to get to Hong Kong Airport from the City Centre
The Airport Express is the most convenient way taking 40 minutes to 1 hour to reach the city, but the tickets cost around HK$200 (£20) which is quite pricey! You can also book your Hong Kong Airport Express here!
Luckily we found the A21 Bus for $35 and the journey was only a little bit longer taking just over 1 hour (it can take 1.5 hours though) Plus, we got to see the impressive views of the islands as we drove over to Hong Kong’s little manmade Airport island.
By Train – We arrived in Hong Kong at Hong Kong West Kowloon Station from Guilin in mainland China. This is the perfectly placed train station as it was only a 15-minute journey to our accommodation in Tsim Sha Tsui.
By Ferry – If you’re arriving from Macau, you’ll be taking a ferry to Hong Kong which is an awesome way to enter the city.

How to get around Hong Kong
We decided to get an Octopus card on arrival at the train station as it’s generally the easiest way to pay for the metro, buses, ferries and trams! You might be able to download an app on iPhone but we have Android and it definitely didn’t work. The Octopus Card costs $150 for a card and $111 for credit as it costs $39 for the physical card.
MTR – The metro is one of the best ways to zoom around the city and may cost around $3-$10 with longer journeys costing $19.
Bus – The buses in Hong Kong are also a great way to get around, especially to the airport. We used them a few times when it worked out more convenient than a metro. They’re also cheaper and it’s free sightseeing!
Star Ferry – An amazing way to cross between Kowloon and Central during your 3 days in Hong Kong! Tickets are very affordable and it’s fun!
Trams in Central – Only costing $3 a trip, these trams will take you all the way through Hong Kong Islands, but they’re pretty slow! It’s a journey to be enjoyed for sure!
Taxis & Uber – You’ll find taxi’s dotted all around Hong Kong, with slightly higher rates than public transport. We never used them but they serve their purpose of getting around quickly!

Best time to visit Hong Kong
The best time to visit Hong Kong is October and November when the climate is usually the most comfortable. Another good time to visit is March to April when it warms up a little. Hong Kong’s winter season (December to February) hovers around 15–18°C which is worthy of a jacket, especially on the high mountains!
May to September is a little too hot, humid and rainy to fully enjoy your 3 day Hong Kong itinerary, but it’s definitely possible! August is the rainiest month so it may be best to avoid it.
We visited in early November and the weather was pleasant! It rained a little with cool breezes but was also really hot the next day!
Is Hong Kong expensive?
Hong Kong is kind of expensive. At first, we were a little worried about blowing our budget – but it wasn’t too bad after all. We had to pay cash to buy and top up our Octopus Card otherwise a lot of places took card payment. Here’s a rough guide of our travel costs in Hong Kong:
We spent $500 on for two octopus cards and a top-up for public transport. So this was $250 (£25) each for all of our transport and we kept the card to use in the future.
Averagely we spent $150 a meal for two people, so about £7.50 each. Our cheapest meal was $80 for a full plate of veggie food at a buffet. Then our most expensive meal was $310 for two mains, a dessert and a drink at a trendy vegan cafe. We spent about $920 on restaurant food during our 3 days in Hong Kong. We also spent $380 on snacks like our 7/11 breakfasts, bananas at a market, drinks or onigiri’s.
Price of Activities in Hong Kong: We paid $301 for a one-way Cable Car journey each and $240 for two Peak Tram Tickets with Sky Terrace. We spent $90 on laundry, which was very needed!
Don’t forget to buy an E-sim for Hong Kong!

Is Hong Kong worth visiting?
Yes!! Hong Kong is definitely worth visiting! We wish we visited sooner! 3 days in Hong Kong is the perfect amount of time to see many of the city’s highlights.
The blend of authentic streets in Sham Shui Po and the modernized but old neighbourhood of Central really made us love Hong Kong. There’s honestly so much to do and we didn’t even get to do any hiking!
Before our trip to Hong Kong, we spent 3 weeks exploring mainland China and it was crazy to see how different Hong Kong really is. As Hong Kong was once a British colony, the city feels like a mix of China and the United Kingdom with so many influences!
It’s somewhere that any traveller to Asia should experience!
Where to visit after Hong Kong
- Yangshuo & Guilin – We arrived from Guilin in mainland China and it only takes 4 hours to reach the beautiful countryside!
- Shanghai – Take a flight to one of China’s modern cities and see another impressive skyline!
- Taiwan – Only a quick flight away is Taiwan! A country full of cute shops, amazing nature and lots of wonderful cities. You can even find beaches in the south!
